Welcome to the January edition of Maker Matters, a monthly digest about our Product Makers community.

Product thought

It’s 2022. A fresh start. A new year.

Stephen Walker and I recently wrote about the 6 trends that will shape product management in 2022. As we said in the article wrap up “those that face the challenges with a clear vision, a coaching mindset, collaborative approach, strong leadership, and smart supporting tools will be well placed to succeed”.

It also takes a community. A community of people you can lean on for perspective, ideas, knowledge, and taking the time personally to lean in and help each other be better. That community may be peers that you work with, or people in your local region, or those in an online community like this one.

This year, I encourage you to find your tribe, your network, and your people. Let them know you’re there for them. Remind them that they aren’t alone. Help them grow. And give them the support they need to succeed in 2022.

Community updates

New programs

We’ve launched two new programs this January:

  • Roundtables to help you connect with product peers, share knowledge and expertise and discuss how others have solved problems and challenges. These moderated sessions are limited to 25 attendees.

  • Meet a Maker provides an opportunity to meet others in the community 1:1, form tighter connections, and share product experiences.

New category

We’ve added a new category – Reads and Listens – to give a home for interesting content you’ve stumbled upon or read that you want to share with the community. Feel free to use it to share links to helpful reads, resources, and listens you’ve come across.

We have a couple of events happening in January:

  • January 12 - Ethan Beute will be talking with us about Human-Centered Communication (also the title of his new best-selling book) and how best to generate attention, build trust, and create engagement when communicating. This is an important topic for anyone working cross-functionally and especially important as a skill for product managers. Register for free

  • January 20 - Jeff Gothelf, co-author of Lean UX, will be doing a live AMA on designing great products with Agile teams. He’ll be covering how you can increase collaboration, improve outcomes, streamline your feedback process, reduce time-to-market, and strengthen your user research and deliver products that matter for your business and users. Register for free and bring your questions for this fantastic session.

We’re still mapping out our February and March events but will have more to share shortly. Keep an eye out on our events page for details.

And if you’re interested in sharing some of your product wisdom and experiences with our community, check out our article on how to become a speaker.
